John Hurt
As BIFF draws to an end, we asked Artistic Director Tony Earnshaw, to reveal his highlights of the past 12 days.
John Hurt made my day when he remarked “there is no other big film festival in the north”. And who am I to argue? He’s done the circuit and knows a good film festival when he sees one.
The venerable Mr. Hurt, receiving his first UK retrospective and a lifetime achievement award, was just one high point of the 16th Bradford International Film Festival.
Others included appearances by Fernando Meirelles, Imelda Staunton, Alex Cox and a reunion for The Railway Children stars Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett and Bernard Cribbins. Of the films the provocative comedy Four Lions, from arch satirist Chris Morris, broke boundaries and taboos and gave the festival its biggest UK premiere in its history.
Here’s to 2011.
