Lecture: Oyster Bay - History of a Tennis Court Presented by David Coles

Wide viewed Cinerama enthusiasts will be entertained by this quirky power point presentation about the Long Island 'Gold Coast' estate which was the base of Cinerama operations for 15 years. It includes rarely seen images of the award-winning gardens, along with various people related to The Playhouse building and the Cinerama studio facility. You will also find out who built the tennis court complex - and why - which also features colour slides by 1950’s Cinerama employee Jane MacLardy Schacht. These are now being kindly donated to this museum.

Presenter David Coles is a Cineramaholic (there is no known cure) who takes us on a journey of discovery which started at the Sydney Plaza Theatre in 1961, when he first saw the 3-panel wonder. We join him on his quest as he unearths many fascinating (and lots of irrelevant) bits of trivia about Cinerama's Oyster Bay home. You'll learn more than you ever needed to know about the fabulously rich Woolworth family, plus the high society scandal of the Woodward shooting.

Impossible to describe – too big to believe... (oh no, sorry that's Cinemiracle), this presentation is more than a slide show, and not quite a book. Be swamped by an overwhelmingly dense cornucopia of detail which David says will have you reeling, and begging for less! He promises that, if you can survive the whole ordeal, it does include a largish collection of interesting photos featuring Cinerama people and equipment inside the tennis court. Quite a few of those images you definitely will not have seen before.

BIOGRAPHY:
David Coles is a widescreen enthusiast, and International Cinerama Society stalwart, who lives in Sydney ~ not far from legendary 3-strip preservationist John Mitchell. Like John Harvey, David is on his first visit to Bradford since attending the opening of "This Is Cinerama" in 1993. He says that he has two reasons for coming this year. One is to shake the hand of Dave Strohmaier, whose documentary "Cinerama Adventure" he greatly admires. The other purpose is to 'bore us all rigid' (his phrase) with his own particular take on aspects of Cinerama history.
