Description:
A carbon print photograph entitled 'The Mountain Nymph, Sweet Liberty', taken by Julia Margaret Cameron in 1870.
The title for this photograph is taken from a line in 'L'Allegro' (1632), by John Milton (1608-1674). The model for the photograph is Mrs Keene. Keene appears to have been a professional model - she also sat for the Pre-Raphaelite painter Sir Edward Burne-Jones. In a letter to Cameron in 1866, John F W Herschel described the photograph as 'really a most astonishing piece of high relief - She is absolutely alive and thrusting out her head from the paper into the air'.
