Kim Longinotto’s Pink Saris is the latest in this documentary filmmaker’s award-winning output focussing on life and work of the Gulabi gang in India, women whose cause is the protection of other women from social injustices.  Following the group’s fascinating, and not uncontroversial, leader Sampat Pal, the film (by a western filmmaker) examines women's self-empowerment in a related, but different, culture to our own.  Longinotto’s extraordinary skills as a documentarian tell the stories of women’s lives in other continents and countries (e.g. Iran, Cameroon) as a global filmmaker of women’s issues.  The session will consider her work alongside that of other filmmakers (e.g. Deepa Mehta, Mira Nair) to compare the documentaries to the fictional representations of women’s empowerment.
