Film

Several long-anticipated movies hit our screen this autumn.

The Oscar winning The Secret in Their Eyes is a terrific investigation into both a brutal crime, and a whole country's past; Tamara Drewe is based on the much loved character from Posy Simmonds' comic strips, and The Girl Who Played With Fire will alrady be familiar to those following Stieg Larsson's novels and their adaptations.

The Illusionist bears the stamp of not one but two recognised, idiosyncratic directors - Sylvain Chromet (Belleville Rendezvous) whose latest is based on a script by the great Jacques Tati (Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Jour de fête).

Another visionary whose films we will be screening this month is Akira Kurosawa. Tati and Kurosawa pushed the limits of what had gone before, and we see the hallmarks of determined creation in new films; in Joon-ho Bong's Mother, Werner Herzog's My Son My Son What Have Ye Done, and Abbas Kiarostami's Certified Copy.
