In an incredible performance by a non-professional actor, 15-year-old Jarvis plays smart, tough and funny Mia, left to her own devices after being kicked out of school. When not winding up her mum and younger sister at home in their small flat, Mia spends hours honing her dance skills, of which she’s justifiably proud. Mum’s new boyfriend seems to understand her, but can she trust him?

Previously an Oscar-winner for her short film Wasp, Andrea Arnold then directed Red Road (2006), which marked her out as a director of huge promise. is her second feature, and bolster's Arnold's reputation as one of this country's very best current filmmaking talents. This is a beautifully sympathetic film that captures subtle, ever-shifting relationships. Essential viewing, and if you know a 15-year-old, take them too.
