A sweeping half-century hardscrabble family saga set in and around Bagheria (‘Baarìa’ in the local dialect) in northern Sicily. Shepherd Cicco teaches himself to read in the Fascist ‘30s and is marked a troublemaker for his efforts... His son Peppino joins the Communists in the heart of Mafia country, and reluctantly must leave for France... The director of Cinema Paradiso storyboards his early memories, infused as always with sheer cinematic brio.
