Nobody noticed when Joyce Vincent died in her North London bedsit in 2003. Her body was only discovered three years later; surrounded by the Christmas presents she'd been wrapping, and with the TV still on.
In this startling documentary, Edge director Carol Morley juxtaposes interviews with people who knew her (after spending five years tracking them down) against fictive, dramatised scenes from her life (Joyce played by new talent Zawe Ashton).
What emerges from Morley's imaginative quest is not only a powerful portrait of Joyce and her heyday in eighties London, but a broader, more intimately disquieting vision of how in contemporary urban life, with all its methods of communication, it is nevertheless possible to disconnect from society entirely.
