With an all-star British cast including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith, John Madden's (Shakespeare in Love) romantic and gently funny film follows a group of British retirees who are enticed to travel to India to take up residence in what they believe to be a newly restored hotel.
Though it's somewhat less luxurious than advertised, the Marigold hotel – run by the optimistic Sonny (Dev Patel) – nevertheless begins to charm them in unexpected ways as, inspired by the beauty of India and by their unexpected new neighbours, they begin to see how love and happiness might yet still be on the horizon.
Adapted from the novel by Deborah Moggach, Madden's entrancing and hilarious comedy is a real delight.
