A Record of Emotion: The Photographs of Frederick H. Evans
Gallery One
Friday 1 October 2010 - Sunday 20 Feb 2011
Evans (British, 1853-1943) began pursuing photography in the mid 1880s, focusing on architecture, specifically medieval cathedrals in England and France. His images of York Minster and Ely Cathedral are among the most renowned architectural photographs in the history of photography. He attempted to capture "a record of an emotion" by invoking the potent symbolism of these awe-inspiring spaces. The exhibition will also include rarely seen landscapes of the English countryside and intimate portraits of family and friends, including George Bernard Shaw and Aubrey Beardsley.
This exhibition has been organised by the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.

David Spero: Churches
Gallery Two
Friday 1 October 2010 - Sunday 20 Feb 2011
Churches showcases David Spero's photography of contemporary secular buildings that have been converted into places of worship. The exhibition covers almost fifty Christian churches, all originally built with no intention of being used for worship. These buildings contrast strikingly with the Gothic style of traditional churches, making Spero's work an excellent counterpoint to the photography of Frederick Evans.
