Summer of Fun is Underway

The school holidays are underway and our visitors are enjoying every minute of their freedom.

Kids of all ages have been playing Wii games on our cinema screen, meeting Super Mario and joining in with fun-packed hands-on workshops and activities inspired by our seven floors of exhibitions and interactive galleries dedicated to film, photography, television and new media. 659 of our visitors even helped us to smash a Guinness World Record!

With the World Record for the largest number of people playing a Nintendo DS simultaneously under our belt, the fun is continuing at the Museum with exciting activities every day throughout the holidays.

As part of a great offering of videogaming events (Games Galore 16–22 August), come and battle your way into the grand final of our DS Tournament. 1st prize: Nintendo DSi XL, 2nd prize: Dragon Quest IX & 3rd prize: Mario and Luigi Bowsers.

Throughout August, Toy Story 3 is showing in 3D on Yorkshire’s only IMAX screen – the biggest in the region, and Shrek is back!.

From the region’s biggest screen to the small screen - fans of TV soaps can celebrate the anniversaries of some of the country’s most popular soaps as Coronation Street turns 50, Hollyoaks is 15 and EastEnders marks 25 years on screen (Soap Secrets Uncovered 9–15 August).

As part of the celebrations, the Museum will become a TV studio for a production of a scene from EastEnders. Visitors could be called upon to work alongside professional actors as floor managers, camera operators or extras (Soap Comes to Life, 10–12 August). There will also be a daily Super Soap Quiz and the chance to Make Your Own TV Advert.

Animation fans will be enchanted by the Museum’s Animation Gallery and the chance to come face to face with Wallace and Gromit, Homer Simpson and Tom and Jerry. Animation workshops take place from 23–29 August, and include professional animator David Bunting giving a live demonstration of the art (Animation Unearthed, 24 August. Free – booking essential). David has trained with Aardman Animations and worked on Shaun the Sheep, Disney’s Tigger Movie and Thunderbirds.
