Lister's Mill

Using family album photographs, this website tells the life stories of six adults with personal experience of the industry which made Bradford rich and famous during the last century - wool. All the participants are in some way connected to Lister's Mill, which remains one of the largest and best known mills in the region. Through their stories, the site gives a glimpse into life in the past, and the effect that the Mill and the woollen industry had on the lives of ordinary people.

Also included are photographs taken by five younger people, each in some way related to one of the adults. Their stories contrast childhood today with what it was like in the early part of this century.

You can explore the site by date, person or subject (geography, English, art, history and personal and social education). Start by clicking on one of the pictures of the participants, who introduce themselves below. There's also a map page to show you where you are and help you move around.

Hello, my name is Madge Shinn. I'm 99 years old now, and I've lived in Yorkshire all my life and I spent many years working at Lister's Mill. Some of the photographs in my section were taken before I was born, and are over 130 years old! Others were taken more recently. I hope you enjoy looking at my photographs, and reading about my life. Things have changed so much since I was a little girl!

My daughter Dorothy introduced me to Luke Dunn and Bethany Murphy, and they became friends of mine. They also have some pages on this website, so you'll be able to see their photographs as well. You might like to compare the photographs that they have taken of their lives with the ones that were taken of my sisters and I as children!
