The Exhibition - Have a Gimmick

Gallery Two 20th June - 31st Aug 2008

To compete with the growing number of people who took their own holiday snapshots, beach photographers adopted various gimmicks. The 'head-through-the-hole' novelty photograph first appeared in the 1890s. Different foregrounds, backdrops and props were chosen for topicality or comic effect. Animals, both real and stuffed, were another popular prop.
