The British seaside was transformed during the nineteenth century. Genteel health resorts for the rich became rowdy holiday playgrounds for the masses. Seaside crowds offered a ready market for all kinds of traders and entertainers - including photographers. The beach photographer soon became as familiar a sight as the Punch and Judy man.
