A view of the garden of Bury Knowle House, the Laing family home in Headington, Oxford, taken by Etheldreda Janet Laing in about 1910. Her daughter, Iris can be seen in the middle distance. Built in about 1800, the house had about 17 acres of land. Major Charles Miskin Laing owned the house from 1901 until 1923. In the 1901 census, he is shown living at Bury Knoll (sic) with his wife Etheldreda and their three-year-old daughter Janet. They have five indoor servants, while their gardener lives at the lodge on the London Road. Oxford City Council have owned the house since 1932. It is now a branch public library and the gardens are a public park
