Janet in Japanese costume, c.1914

Janet in Japanese costume, c.1914

A portrait of Laing’s older daughter Janet, wearing Japanese costume. The Edwardian period saw a revival of interest in all things Japanese, or Japanoiserie. For this indoor portrait, Janet would have had to retain her pose for a considerable length of time – possibly as long as one minute. She has done remarkably well but has moved her head slightly during the exposure.
