Merseyside 1979: Carty (a star-making performance from newcomer Nicky Bell) is in search of an identity. He’s recently buried his mother and can’t wait to race from the graveside to the terraces. There he becomes one of ‘The Pack’, a band of baby-faced young thugs in designer label attire led by a thirtysomething dad (Stephen Graham, Made in England) who live for the thrill of the scrap. Carty finds brotherhood in The Pack, particularly, with Elvis (Liam Boyle). Awaydays is a feisty debut, a vivid recreation of a fascinating time.
