  • Description:

A bromoil print photograph of the dancer Clotilde von Derp (1892-1974), taken by Rudolf Dührkoop and Minya Diez-Dührkoop in 1913.

In this portrait Dührkoop has emphasised his subject by reducing the background to a cloudy blur. Clotilde and her Ukrainian husband Alexander Sacharoff (1886-1963) were both noted avant-garde dancers. They were part of the German 'Blaue Reiter Circle', a radical artistic group who attempted to combine painting, music and dance.

This photograph was exhibited in the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain in 1913. Dührkoop often worked with his daughter Minya Dièz-Dührkoop, who took over Dührkoop's studio after his death in 1918.
