June 8th - September 29th 2007

One statistic says it all: in 2006, the Indian film industry made over 900 films while Hollywood produced around 600. Though films are produced in various centres in India, the popular Hindi films made in Mumbai, commonly known as ‘Bollywood’ movies, are the best known. They enjoy worldwide distribution and huge audiences, for whom their stars eclipse their Hollywood counterparts in celebrity. Indian cinema is markedly different from Western cinema in its conventions and its characteristic mixing of genres, though it has never been immune from Western influence, and its growing popularity in the West and Far East has led to crossover international productions. This exhibition traces the development of India’s popular cinema through its key films, themes, actors and characters.

Curated by Dr Rajinder Dudrah and Michael Harvey.

Organised in association with the International Indian Film Academy and supported by Bradford District Council.

In this section you can find out more about the films, the stars and directors featured in the exhibition. Discover the different genres associated with Indian cinema, see the camera used by the first Indian film-maker and look more closely at the process used to make the posters in the show. There’s also a timeline, a book list and links to other relevant sites.
