Film Notes
Jennifer Jason Leigh and rising British talent Jude Law play a couple unexpectedly thrust together by an assassination attempt. Leigh plays the creator of a mind-bending virtual-reality game system, who is targeted by an assassin paid by a movement of ‘reality’ fanatics to kill all game designers. A life-and-death struggle ensues during a demonstration of the game, and the characters, as well as the audience, must decide what is really happening and what is merely virtual. In his first film after Crash, Cronenberg returns to the darkly original universe he created in such genre classics as The Fly (whose effects designer worked on eXistenZ), Scanners, and Videodrome, once again combining elements of science fiction, horror and action-adventure. eXistenZ's version of virtual-reality blends computer science with biology to create an experience based on the player's own personality, experiences, and - being a Cronenberg film - darkest fears.Courtesy of Momentum Releasing.

This film has been selected by artist and photographer Robbie Cooper, whose Immersion exhibition is currently showing at the National Media Museum.
Immersion explores the many ways in which people disengage from everyday life and immerse themselves in media. Cooper's images include recorded responses to “horror as entertainment and documented acts of atrocity”. To tie-in with the exhibition, FFW2010 is screening two films from David Cronenberg that have influenced his work: eXistenz and Videodrome.
