Welcome

... to the Fantastic Films Weekend, the North of England’s premier festival dedicated to horror, fantasy and sci-fi cinema and television.

"fantastic indeed" – The Guardian

"stronger than ever … a pulse-racing assortment of horror, sci-fi and fantasy flicks" – Metro

"Fandom’s best-kept secret – a gem tucked away in the black north of England" – Headpress

“Hooray for Horrorwood! Some of the creepiest, freakiest and scariest movies ever.” – Telegraph & Argus

This dynamic annual celebration of old, new, bloody and obscure is hosted by the National Media Museum, a unique site that can screen all film formats including widescreen 70mm, 3-strip Cinerama and IMAX.

Dracula

Each year the FFW showcases a disparate line-up of classic chillers, sci-fi shockers, fantasy epics, vintage TV shows and rarely seen gems from the vaults. It runs the gamut from the stark monochrome classics of the silent era through to the latest digital epics.

Traditionally the Fantastic Films Weekend focuses on British, American and European movies by the likes of Hammer, Amicus and AIP. Guests have included Robin Hardy, John Hough, Lawrence Gordon Clark and the sci-fi legend that is Brian Aldiss.

This year the line-up includes the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse double-bill, the ultimate Cushing/Lee pairing in Dracula, Daughters of Darkness, Eyes without a Face, Blood on Satan’s Claw and John Carpenter’s The Thing in 70mm with an exclusive video introduction from Carpenter himself. Our guests will be cult filmmakers Harry Kümel, Peter Duffell, Piers Haggard and Robert Fuest.

Join us - and feel the fear.
