Seen by many as the precursor to films such as Amores Perros, City of God
and A Clockwork Orange, Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados is a fictional, but
unsentimental, portrait of slum kids living the poverty and brutality of post-World War Two
Mexico City. A film which tackles such a realist subject might seem strange from a director so
closely associated with the surrealist movement, but Buñuel’s trademark dream sequences
and transcendental moments play a key part in revealing the consciousness of the film’s
protagonist. A brutally candid, but beautifully crafted film, which still has the power to shock.
